What did the Pope say was wrong?
Pope Benedict XVI created much furor within the Muslim community with his speech quoting the Byzantine Christian emperor Manuel II Palaiologos in which he said;
Muhammad was more of a political and military leader than a religious one. He used religion to instill the fear of wrath of god and using the fear of god, he projected himself as his last and final prophet whose words were god’s own words. It was the mind of a genius that eventually fulfilled most of his political and military ambitions.
Muhammad indeed brought in some fresh thoughts, some of which are relevant even now in the 21st Century. He was a progressive thinker. However, a major chunk of whatever Muhammad brought was borrowed from existing practices (remember how Moses and Jesus remained prophets in the Koran). Therefore, Manuel, though not entirely correct, was indeed correct on most counts that he wanted to say then, and now what the Pope quoted.
Ironically, the fatwas and the reactions that followed in the Islamic countries and within the Muslim communities worldwide actually second what Manuel said. Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.Muhammad was a shrewd leader. His new religion is extensively taken from Judaism which preceded Christianity – the religion which was prevalent and dominating during that time, and conveniently recognizing (read using) Jesus Christ as a true prophet so that the Christians can be swayed to believe him. Then the prophet’s Koran came into being – a slick, well-composed book with modern (w.r.t. the times then) thoughts, laws and a few new things thrown in, not to mention incorporation of verses justifying violent campaigns in the name of safeguarding faith in the name of god.

You speak the truth. But watch as the West again apologizes for offending Muslims. This is the Danish cartoon controversy over and over again -- and we in the West need to stop pandering to Muslims.
Every religion gets insulted everyday knowingly or unknowingly whether by means of a local force, (such as a friend who may be ignorant) or by a head force. (i.e- the pope).

Of course not all Muslims can be put into this category but some of the fundemental sides of Islam are certainly nothing but evil and these certainly fit into the bracket he was talking about, the response to his comments (a nun murdered/churches set on fire) surely just reinforces this doesnt it? Just like sporting a skull-cap, shouting slogans of jihad against all other faiths, moving towards radicalism, suicide bombings and all things evil and barbaric have become a fashion for the Muslims these days. Right?
I am sorry, but I can not understand why some Islamic people react so strongly on some misunderstood speech from the pope, when they at the same time apparently do not mind terrorism, killings, public executions, disrespect for women, burnings of embassies all in the name of Allah (just to mention a few things) - or what about Al-quaidas use of the unislamic media TV, I somehow thought it was against their version of Islam to make pictures of people!? Talking about a bad case of double standards..
My thoughts go out to all the “normal” Muslim people who certainly do not deserve to be categorized with people of this kind. It is sad that such a great religion is being hijacked by violent jerks.

As a civilization, when are we going to realize that religion divides? Think it doesnt, then how do you explain whats going on now? Peoples of all religions believe equally that theirs is true, what needs to be realized is that Life is what you believe. Just because weve believed something since childhood or not, doesnt make us right or wrong. We need to realize there are many different type of prophets. The goal of any religion should not be war and killing. While this may seem obvious, often times the tenets of religion are forgotten or bastardized to say what one wants. The Pope is the Pope because he is a man who believes in GOD in Jesus. Therefore he does not believe in anyone else and should not have to. Do muslim/moslems go around preaching words they do not believe in ....so why should the Pope.
